Not your typical urban bungalow, Hillcrest Hide-Away B&B (built in 1927) attributes it's spacious comfort to it's Craftsman architecture. The primary inspiration for the Craftsman style home was to look to nature, local materials, and local building traditions. When you walk into a Craftsman home, you experience the the sense of space, the openness of the rooms, and the bold-square styling. Hillcrest Hide-Away lodging guests enjoy the benefits!
The Craftsman style was tied to the Craftsman movement of the early 20th century, which stressed comfort and utility. Craftsman homes have a sloping roof line and a wide, sheltering overhang that makes the house appear to nestle into the earth. The porch is wide and comfortable. In addition, windows have divided panes in the upper sash and a single pane in the lower sash.
The woodwork is heavy and dark, but is usually square or simple. These homes have dark-patina brass hardware and cozy lanterns hanging from the ceiling or as wall sconces.
Hillcrest Hide-Away - A Green Destination
As certified members of iStayGreen.org, GreenRoutes.org, and Lanesboro Local, we embrace sustainable tourism practices in our B&B. We support small businesses that commit to being environmentally sustainable while building the local economy. We employ environmentally sensitive practices throughout our inn:
- Many breakfast ingredients are purchased from local growers.
- Guest drinking water is dispensed in a water cooler rather than individual plastic bottles.
- Cleaning products are made from biodegradable environmentally friendly ingredients.
- Guest amenities are provided in dispensers thereby eliminating landfill waste.
- Zone heating/cooling is used in all rooms. Guests individually control their comfort level. Room temperatures are controlled when the room is not rented.
- All landscape plants are purchased from local suppliers.
- Chemicals and fertilizers are seldom used in our yard. Each year we add more perennial plants to our gardens. Annual plants are watered from rain barrels.
- And more.
We encourage you to follow these practices in your home.
